Montmorillonite desiccant is a desiccant clay: a naturally occurring mineral of the montmorillonite–bentonite group, supplied in sachets and bags. It works by physical adsorption — water vapour is held on the internal surface of the mineral with no chemical reaction, no deliquescence and no liquid by-product, so there is nothing to leak onto the goods it protects. The material is chemically stable and inert, non-flammable, and classified as a non-hazardous substance that is not dangerous goods for transport. Adsorption is reversible: at elevated temperatures the clay gives moisture back, so it suits ambient-temperature storage and general cargo rather than hot environments. Being a natural mineral rather than a manufactured one, its performance varies somewhat from batch to batch.
