Deoxidizer Tank: How Oxygen Absorbers Are Sized for a Container

One number decides it — the volume sealed inside the pack.

Sizing a deoxidizer tank — a sealed container or pack in which oxygen absorbers pull the headspace oxygen down — comes down to one number: the volume sealed inside the pack. The sachet model is chosen by that package volume, the pack is closed in a low-oxygen-permeability composite bag, and the absorber is placed with the product before the bag is heat-sealed. Get the volume and the seal right and the deoxidizer does the rest.

What a Deoxidizer Does

A deoxidizer is an iron-based oxygen absorber supplied in sachet form, for example a 10 g net sachet. It absorbs oxygen to inhibit the growth of mould and aerobic bacteria and so extends shelf life. It also helps prevent oil rancidity, the oxidative browning of meat and the loss of vitamins in food. It is not a desiccant: it removes oxygen, not moisture, which is why the two are used together rather than instead of each other — see deoxidizer vs desiccant if that distinction is the one you are weighing.

Sizing by Package Volume

The selection rule is simple and it is the one that matters: choose the model according to the package volume. The larger the sealed volume of air around the product, the more oxygen has to be absorbed, so a bigger sachet is needed. Because the amount of oxygen is set by the volume you seal, the first thing to measure is the internal volume of the finished pack, not its weight and not the weight of the product alone. Tell us that figure and we will match the sachet model to it.

The Pack Has to Stay Sealed

A deoxidizer can only hold oxygen down if new oxygen cannot keep getting in. The intended use is to place the absorber with the product inside a low-oxygen-permeability composite bag and then heat-seal it. A loose or permeable wrap lets air leak back in and defeats the absorber, no matter how large a sachet you use. Choose the bag material for low oxygen permeability, and seal it properly.

Placement and Handling

Where Deoxidizers Are Used

The applications are food and shelf-life driven: Chinese and Western cakes and pastries; livestock and poultry meat products; nuts and roasted goods; dried aquatic products and other dried foods; medicines and healthcare products; and animal feed such as fishing bait and pet food. For the pharmaceutical and food side, pair it with our medicinal and food desiccant, which handles the moisture while the deoxidizer handles the oxygen.

What to Specify

Send us the pack you are protecting, its sealed volume and your target shelf life, and we will recommend the sachet model. Prices are quoted on request. Full details are on the deoxidizer (oxygen absorber) page.
