In storage, a desiccant only works inside an enclosure. It can hold the humidity down in a sealed cabinet, a wrapped pallet, a carton or a shelf unit, but it cannot dry an open warehouse aisle. So the first question is what you are actually closing off: a whole room, a wrapped pallet, or the small enclosed spaces and shelving where goods sit. Each level calls for a different product and a different quantity.
| Level | Product | How it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Enclosed room, cabinet or basement | Calcium chloride desiccant | High-capacity moisture absorption for warehouses and basements; keeps working across 20–100% relative humidity. |
| Wrapped pallets, cartons and long-term bulk storage | Montmorillonite (clay) desiccant | Listed by us for warehouse and long-term storage; a naturally inert, non-flammable mineral with no liquid by-product to leak. |
| Shelves, wardrobes and small enclosed spaces | Industrial desiccant sachets | Placed in packs, cabinets and wardrobes for moisture, rust, mildew and odour prevention. |
The common mistake is to size the desiccant from the volume of the enclosure. For a sealed box that is already wrong — and for a storeroom it is worse — because the air sealed inside is a tiny load compared with the moisture that leaks in over time. What actually drains the desiccant is:
The practical consequence is the same as we set out for dry boxes: the right quantity depends on how leaky the enclosure is and how often it is opened. Start generous, then measure. Our guide to sizing silica gel for a sealed box works through the arithmetic — and why the obvious calculation understates the requirement.
Silica gel and clay both adsorb physically, which means the water they hold can be driven off again by heat and the desiccant reused. Calcium chloride cannot be regenerated — it absorbs into a gel and is spent. For the grades that can be recharged, our guide to silica gel regeneration gives the safe temperatures by type. Whether regeneration is worth the labour depends on the scale: for a few shelf cabinets it is easy, but for large stores of single-use sachets, replacing is usually simpler.
Tell us what you store, whether the space is a room, a wrapped pallet or shelving, the rough size and how often it is opened, and the climate. We will recommend the product and the starting quantity, quoted on request.
Describe the space and the goods — we will specify the desiccant and the quantity to start with.
