Shipping Garments & Textiles to the Gulf: Preventing Mildew

The Gulf is one of the world's largest import markets for apparel and home textiles — and one of the harshest environments for getting them there intact. High humidity, extreme heat and long sea voyages combine to create a perfect storm for mildew, musty odours and mould staining. A single rejected container of garments can wipe out the margin on a whole season, so moisture protection is not optional.

Why Garments and Textiles Suffer in Transit to the Gulf

Textiles are hygroscopic: cotton, viscose, wool and leather absorb water vapour from the air during production, packing and warehouse storage. When that cargo is sealed into a container and moves from a temperate port to a 45 °C Gulf terminal, the absorbed moisture is released into the container air and condenses on the cooler surfaces — usually the roof and doors. The result is container rain dripping onto cartons, and the warm, damp conditions inside the pack become an ideal breeding ground for mould.

Another frequent cause is packing while fabrics are still warm from pressing or damp from finishings. Free moisture carried in with the goods is the hardest thing for any desiccant to control, so it must be managed before loading.

The Damage Looks Like This

• Mildew and mould staining — dark spots and a musty smell that cannot be washed out.
• Colour bleeding — moisture migration carries dye between garments.
• Metal corrosion — zippers, buttons and hangers rust, staining the fabric.
• Carton collapse — softening and mould on packaging leads to rejected or damaged consignments.
• Rejection at customs or inspection — Gulf buyers inspecting for mould routinely reject whole shipments.

How to Protect a Textile Shipment

Protection works on two levels: controlling moisture inside the packaging, and controlling humidity inside the whole container.

Inside the cartons

• Put a silica gel sachet (often 5–20 g) inside each individual pack or polybag, at the bottom where moisture collects.
• For high-value items, consider a larger sachet per dozen garments.
• Never pack fabrics that are still warm or visibly damp; let them equilibrate in a dry area first.
• Use a moisture-barrier liner (PE or foil) inside cartons where possible.

Inside the container

• Hang container desiccants (calcium chloride based) from the side wall lashing rings, evenly spaced along the length of the load.
• Allow 6–16 units of 1 kg for a 20ft container, 20–32 for a 40ft, depending on cargo dampness and voyage length.
• Line the container roof and doors with a container liner for extra-prone cargo such as cotton and leather.
• Leave gaps for air circulation; do not block the doors where condensation is worst.

Choosing the Right Desiccant

For container-level protection, calcium chloride container desiccants are the standard because they keep absorbing even at high relative humidity. Inside individual packs, silica gel is preferred: it is food-safe, dust-free and will not leak even if the sachet is damaged. For leather goods, add an acid-free tissue wrap to avoid tanning-agent migration.
